Christian Service Commission      Back to Ministries  Parish Home

This commission is responsible for helping the pastor and parish council inform and involve the parish community in the service to one another and to the larger community of city, state, nation, and the world.

The commissioner is elected by the commission’s ministries for a three-year term on the parish council.

Blood Donor Program

The Blood Donor Program works with the community to maintain a voluntarily donated blood supply. It encourages parishioners who qualify to donate blood on a regular schedule. No one should be denied blood because it is not available.

Each year, to encourage new donors and for the convenience of regular donors, Christ the King holds two blood drives. One is usually early in the winter and the other is in the summer. Both are held in the School Conference Room. Volunteer donors, hosts and hostesses, cookie bakers and telephone callers are needed to help with the program.

Hospitality/Welcome Program

Members of the Hospitality/Welcome Committee personally contact newly registered parishioners to welcome them to Christ the King and to act as a liaison between newcomers and the ministries they wish to pursue.

The second weekend of each month is designated as “Hospitality Weekend.” At each Mass that weekend volunteers act as greeters to provide a warm and friendly welcome to all parishioners — new and old alike. After the Masses light refreshments are offered. An opportunity to register in the parish is also available at that time.

This program is open to anyone who is enthusiastic, warm, and has a friendly personality.

King’s Crier

The King’s Crier is the parish newsletter, which is published five times each year. The King’s Crier is mailed to the homes of all members of the parish (thereby providing communication from the church whether or not members of that household are able to attend Mass regularly) and to non-parish school families.

More details regarding items of interest can be included in the King’s Crier than in the smaller Sunday bulletins. New policies can be explained; spiritual direction can be given; parish activities can be promoted; parishioner achievements can be acknowledged. The King’s Crier also provides a forum for parishioner opinion through the “Letters to the Editor” column.

The newsletter is written and edited by a volunteer staff with assistance from parish staff members. Volunteer writers, photographers, and

folding/stuffing personnel are always needed and welcomed.

Parish Service League

The Parish Service League ministers to the needs of the Christ the King community. It is involved in several services, among them providing food for families after funerals, serving the funeral luncheons, serving at parish receptions, transportation to church, and embroidery of the baptismal bibs.

Membership is open to all registered members of the parish.

Peace and Justice Committee (ad hoc)

The Peace and Justice Committee seeks:

1. To raise the awareness of the parish to the situation of the poor locally, nationally and in the third world with emphasis on the structural causes of poverty;

2. To provide the parish with information on issues related to peace and non-violence.

The committee attempts to educate the Christ the King community on issues pertaining to human rights and welfare. It is our intention to encourage active participation in causes for human justice and prayers for peace, and to increase awareness of political issues such as welfare and health care reform, the death penalty, and other timely concerns.

Ugly Quilt Committee

The Ugly Quilt group creates quilts for the homeless to use in the winter.  The Ugly Quilt is a sleeping bag utility quilt made from clean used or no-cost fabrics.  The simple sleeping bag has no market value to assure that the homeless are the beneficiaries.  The quilt can be made in less than a day.  A group can make one in an hour or so.

Pro-Life

The Pro-Life committee’s mission is to be the voice, in our church community, that reminds all of the beauty and dignity of life. This is done through the promotion of Natural Family Planning, through the support of local and national pro-life activities and programs and through prayer support. The Pro-Life committee’s concerns are contraception, abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, capital punishment, as well as the rights of the handicapped and the elderly. Membership includes a volunteer chairperson and interested parishioners. The committee’s ultimate goal is to see that all parishioners are cooperating with God’s plan for life.

Gabriel Project

The Gabriel Project is a ministry to offer emotional and spiritual guidance, friendship, resources, and a great deal of love to a pregnant woman. Gabriel “Angels” from our parish build relationships with women in crisis pregnancies, helping them choose life and supporting them throughout their pregnancy and beyond. The rest of the parish can support this project as well through continued prayer, material contributions, and financial donations. We welcome all those interested in joining this ministry!

Parish Nurse Ministry

This mission of the parish nurse is to promote physical, mental and spiritual health by combining faith and healing. The major functions of the Parish Nurse: Health Educator, Personal health, counselor, Trainer of volunteers, Organizer of support groups, Referral agent, Integrator of faith and health, Health advocate. Functions at Christ the King: Monthly blood pressure checks, coordinates blood drives, assists parishioners in applying for prescription drug assistance, yearly Flu Shot clinic.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

The St. Vincent de Paul Society seeks — in a spirit of justice and charity and by person-to-person involvement — to help people who are suffering. Members visit people in their homes, in hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, prisons, and other correctional institutions. They also answer the telephone “hot line” a few hours each month, work at the Food Pantry, the Society Warehouse, drive the warehouse trucks to pick up donations, and perform other charitable acts.

The aim of the Society is to bring social justice and the friendship of true charity to all those in need. Members meet monthly. The group elects its own officers. Membership is open to everyone. The only requirement is that the members be charitable with their time.

Christmas Giving Tree

The Christmas Giving Tree gives the parishioners an opportunity to help needy families during the Christmas season with gifts of clothing, toys, and food.  Many families from the Noble Center are the recipients of these gifts.  Many parishioners take tags off the tree and purchase the gifts.  Many of our adults, children and teens help with the writing of the tags, the sorting of the gifts, and the delivery of the gifts.  It is truly an all-parish outreach to those who are less fortunate.

Earth Stewardship Ministry

The Earth Stewardship Committee exists to promote the joyful stewardship of our earth through spirituality, simplicity, and sustainability.  They work towards this goal through thoughtful education and action.
